Job Description

The Director, Strategic Services, manages CHF Canada’s programs in the areas of government relations, communications, external relations and membership development. The Director oversees the successful planning and execution of meetings of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. The director assists in the successful design and delivery of the annual national members’ meeting. The Director is a member of CHF Canada’s management team. The Director is bilingual in English and French.   



1.         Government Relations

In consultation with the Executive Director, the Director directs CHF Canada’s response to external developments and issues affecting the growth and operation of the co-operative housing movement, other than those issues affecting Ontario co-ops alone.  The Director is responsible for CHF Canada’s advocacy and government relations programs with respect to federal issues and campaigns and in other CHF Canada regions as required.

2.         Communications

The Director has overall responsibility for CHF Canada’s print, and electronic national communications and social media programs and ensures that CHF Canada’s bilingual services, plain-language and clear-design policies are observed.

3.         Membership Development

The Director is responsible for CHF Canada’s member and associate recruitment and loyalty programs, developing strategies for the successful implementation of these program. S/he administers CHF Canada’s membership policies, oversees relations with members and ensures CHF Canada representation at member events.

The Director ensures the timely collection of membership dues and national sector support contributions.

The Director oversees CHF Canada’s awards and member recognition programs.

4.         Governance

The Director is responsible for the planning and organization of meetings of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, director nominations and elections, and the orientation, training and evaluation of directors.

The Director is a member of the Annual General Meeting Planning Committee and participates in the planning, organization and delivery of all aspects of national members’ meetings.  S/he prepares agendas for national members’ meetings, manages the annual meeting resolutions process, and assists in drafting resolutions from the Board of Directors. The Director ensures CHF Canada representation at regional member meetings held in advance of the annual general meeting and provides support to the annual meeting chairs.

5.         External Relations

In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Director maintains relationships with outside organizations, including other co-operatives, national housing associations and advocacy groups whose goals are complementary to those of CHF Canada.

The Director is responsible for managing CHF Canada’s corporate relationships with Rooftops Canada Foundation, Co-ops and Mutuals Canada and other allied organizations including our members and allied organizations in Quebec.

6.         Special Projects

The Director assumes responsibility for special projects as they arise in consultation with the Executive Director and other members of the CHF Canada Management Team.

 1.         A university degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.

 2.         Experience in a leading government relations and/or communications role in the co‑operative housing movement in Canada, or equivalent parallel experience.

 3.         A commitment to the growth and development of the non-profit co-operative housing movement in Canada.

 4.         Familiarity with other sectors of the Canadian co-operative movement

 5.         Familiarity with other Canadian community housing sectors

  6.         Excellent oral and written communication skills.

 7.         Human resource and financial management skills.

 8.         Time management skills and the ability to set priorities.

 9.         Ability to work independently and collegially as part of a team.



 1.         Travel within Canada is regularly required.

 2.         Long hours are frequently required.
