More than one billion people continue to live in extreme poverty around the world. Cuso International believes that overcoming poverty and inequality is a global responsibility that requires the efforts of the private sector, governments, INGOs, civil society organizations, community groups and individual citizens. In partnership with these groups and through its volunteers and 160 skilled staff in 22 countries, Cuso International is making change happen in Latin America, the Caribbean, Central and East Africa, Southeast Asia, and Canada. Each year, its programs in the fields of health, education, income and livelihood, natural resource management, access to justice and good governance, mobilize hundreds of volunteer professionals to work alongside local partners and deliver real results.
Cuso International has grown in scale, scope and skill during the past several years and is transitioning from an annual operation of $20m to one approaching $35m. As Chief Executive Officer, reporting to a reputable, international Board of Directors, you will develop and deliver on the organization’s strategic priorities, taking bold steps to scale up its impact in Canada and around the world. To this end, you will enhance Cuso International’s presence and brand nationally and globally, promote its mission and mandate of volunteerism, diversify and secure funding, champion innovative and responsive programs that bring lasting change, create global partnerships across all sectors, foster an empowering culture, and promote excellence in both operations and governance.
As the ideal candidate, you are a seasoned chief executive officer, or equivalent, with the strategic vision, financial acumen, sound judgment, and governance experience to take Cuso International to the next level. You bring a blend and balance of internal and external management skills, with a strong focus on organizational performance, accountability and transparency. Throughout your career, you have motivated your teams to embrace change, to challenge the status quo, and to take risks. A confident, authentic and compelling communicator, you are well-versed in board relations, stakeholder and partner engagement, marketing and branding, and government and media relations. You have a proven record of success in strategic planning, fund development, innovative financing, resource mobilization and social entrepreneurship. Your experience in and knowledge of international development and creative programming will be of great value, as will your understanding of inequality and poverty and your demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice. Fluency in both of Canada’s official languages is required.
