Job Description


Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada (BGCC) is seeking a proven strategically-oriented finance management and operational effectiveness professionalto join our executiveteam in the role of Vice President, Finance & Operations.  This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the dynamic team supporting Boys & Girls Clubs across Canada to positively impact the lives of children and youth by building life skills through education and recreation programs.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President, Finance & Operations of BGCC will set the financial policy and direction for the organization, and will be an active participant in, and driver of, the organization’s overall strategy. The Vice President will lead all financial administration, business planning, and budgeting. As a member of the Executive Team (BGCC’s senior management team), the Vice President will work closely with the finance and governance committees and the boards of both the BGCC and BGCC Foundation. In addition to leading on all financial management matters, The Vice President will also manage the internal business operations that support the mission, vision and effectiveness of BGCC, including information technology, human resources, administrative management, risk assessment and management, and strategic and organizational development support to the CEO.

The role is based in the national BCGG office in Toronto, at Sheppard Avenue East and Highway 404.



For more than a century, Boys and Girls Clubs in communities across Canada have been helping young people to discover, develop, and achieve their best potential as they grow to become future adults, citizens, and leaders.  As the largest agency in our country serving children and youth exclusively, Boys and Girls Clubs provide quality after school and out-of-school programs to children and youth that support the healthy physical, educational, and social development of more than 200,000 young people and their families in Canada each year.  Our mission is to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life. 

Our 16,300 community volunteers and over 5,100 trained and dedicated full and part-time staff are motivated by the BGCC vision that all children and youth discover and achieve their dreams and grow up to be healthy, successful, and active participants in society.  Club fees are affordable and are subsidized or waived for families in need.

We take pride in developing partnerships with coalitions, other organizations, and governments to develop positions and public policy proposals that enhance child and youth well-being in Canada.  Our experience indicates that approaching child and youth development from a positive and preventative developmental perspective effectively contributes to crime prevention, health promotion, and positive opportunities for young people.  Because of this, our Public Policy efforts focus on:

The BGCC National Youth Council (NYC) ensures that youth have input into national initiatives and activities.  The NYC has been in existence for over 10 years and has enabled BGCC youth to plan and lead a national youth forum every two years.  Council members serve as ambassadors and role models for other children and youth throughout the organization and positively influence decision-making on issues related to young people.

The national Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada leads the Boys & Girls Clubs movement across Canada, encompassing 96 Clubs in 625 community service locations.  The national team of 30 staff works out of the Toronto office, as well as satellite locations across the country.



Executive Leadership and Teamwork 

  • As a member of the executive team, assist in setting the operational directions in the context of the mission, strategic plan and current priorities;

  • Provide strategic support and advice to the CEO on organizational development, resource allocation, and risk assessment and management;

  • Provide governance and subject area support to the Board including an overall financial policy development and the risk management plan, and support to the Finance and Audit Committees for both BGCC and the BGCC Foundation, as well as the Investment Committee for the BGCC Foundation;

  • Lead and/or participate on cross functional teams to support high quality services to clubs and other stakeholders;

  • As required, provide information and support to clubs and regional departments on matters related to the key responsibilities.

Financial Management

  • Oversee the financial affairs of Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, as well as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada Foundation, including budgeting, financial forecasting, and cash flow;

  • Has responsibility for accurate and timely financial reporting to senior management, and to the Treasurers of both BGCC and the BGCC Foundation, and through that, to the boards of both organizations. As part of reporting, review monthly results and implement monthly variance reporting;

  • Develop and manage the annual budgets for the organization;

  • Oversee the annual audit process for both organizations, ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures, and compliance with regulatory requirements;

  • Manage the financial services team, including recruiting, orienting and developing a high calibre team.

Human Resources

  • Engage with Human Resources consultants to ensure the review and implementation of Human Resources policies across the organization;

  • Establish and implement HR efforts that effectively communicate and support the firm’s mission and strategic vision;

  • Further develop Boys & Girls Clubs’ human resources and administration, enhancing professional development, compensation and benefits; review and secure benefits providers, performance evaluation, training, and recruiting;

  • Ensure that recruiting processes are consistent and streamlined;

  • Establish and manage a comprehensive training program to educate employees regarding staff tools, policies, and procedures;

  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality;

  • Design and develop measurement system to monitor the acceptance and movement of cultural issues throughout the organization and to ensure structural alignment with HR and supporting systems.

Information Technology

  • Lead IT strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, implementation and management of current and future IT systems across the organization;

  • Lead Boys & Girls Clubs technical consultants and resources to design an IT plan for the future, and implement it successfully to meet IT needs (hardware and software) as the organization grows;

  • Engage other members of the executive and management team to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that all financial, IT, and HR solutions positively support Boys & Girls Clubs’ evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs;

  • As the de-facto “organizational effectiveness” guru, skillfully guide BGCC as change agent through improvements on the IT and business systems front.

Administrative Management

  • Oversee and supervise the administrative function of the organization including reception, property/facility management, safety of the work environment, and provision of furnishings and equipment necessary for effective operations;

  • Oversee the management of all leases, contracts and other financial commitments;

  • Work closely and transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultants;

  • Monitor risk management policies and procedures to ensure that program and organizational risks are minimized;

  • Lead relationships with legal counsel for appropriate advice on related issues;

  • Advise on appropriate insurance coverage for the organization and the Board of Directors;

  • Monitor all legislation relevant to the organization (employment standards, occupation health and safety, privacy, human rights, etc.) and all regulations on professional certification to ensure that the organization is compliant.



Ideally the Vice President, Finance & Operations will possess the following experience, attributes and qualifications enabling success in the role:

Key Experience

  • Extensive financial management leadership experience ideally coupled with administrative and operations accountabilities, including information technology and human resources.

  • Experience operating in a multi-stakeholder or federated-model environment of some complexity and national in scope, preferably in the not-for-profit sector, or with related and relevant private sector experience.

  • Successful leadership experience, either as Project Manager, Executive Sponsor and/or Change Agent on a significant business transformation initiative to enhance organizational effectiveness with information technology and systems as key tools for improvements.

  • Demonstrated experience, at the executive level, with participating in and/or facilitating an organization’s strategic plan.

  • Knowledge of, exposure to, or experience with broad strategic human resources initiatives to engage employees, encourage maximum performance and dedication and promote company culture and vision.

  • Knowledge of board governance, and experience presenting and reporting to a Board of Directors on both financial matters and risk management issues.

Exposure to, or experience with, fundraising revenues, philanthropic donations and grant disbursements, and the financial systems to manage, analyze, forecast and plan for such would be a decided asset, as would exposure to investment management of philanthropic foundation assets.

  • Planning for Results:  With excellent analytical and organizational skills to plan for and achieve stated goals, the successful candidate can take vision, strategy and concepts through to actionable implementation plans.

  • Capacity for Change:  Passionate, energetic, and committed to effecting change both at the systems level for organizational effectiveness, as well as at the enterprise level as it manifests in the BGCC’s “company culture”.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and well-developed presentation abilities - clearly and concisely articulates ideas, concepts and information.

  • Judgement: Solid business acumen with a keen awareness of the business implications of decisions, and an orientation to efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Service Orientation: Demonstrates a commitment to quality excellence in a service orientated role to continually improve upon the delivery of the BGCC’s mandate and goals.

  • Relationship Building and Collaboration:  Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate and build relationships at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders.

  • Mission and Member Driven:  Heartfelt commitment to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada and desire to support member Clubs to achieve the Mission and Vision of the BGCC.



  • At minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent.

  • Professional accounting designation (CA, CGA or CMA), or an MBA or related equivalent.

  • Thorough knowledge of the legislative, accounting and specific Canada Revenue Agency requirements for not-for-profits is preferred.

  • Professional training in human resources management, organizational development or related would be considered an asset.

  • Information technology and systems knowledge including:
    • Advanced level work with accounting packages (BGCC uses Great Plains software);

    • Strong proficiency with Microsoft products including Office365;

    • Familiarity with database administration particularly MS Dynamics CRM.

  • Bilingual: As Boys & Girls Clubs extends its reach deeper into Quebec, it is placing greater priority on the provision of French services to its member Clubs and within the BGCC movement.  Professional competency in French is a significant asset but not a requirement.
