The Association for Mineral Exploration (“AME”) is the lead association for the mineral exploration and development industry based in British Columbia (“B.C.”). As part of our succession plan, we are looking to fill the role of President & CEO. The President & CEO is responsible for strategic and balanced leadership in managing, planning, and implementing all of AME’s activities in support of the Association’s strategic plan and emerging matters of critical significance to our members.
Reporting to the Board of Directors through the Executive Committee, this role engages and collaborates with a variety of stakeholders to advocate on behalf of AME’s membership. This is an important and challenging time for our industry and the Association. The successful candidate will work to champion our industry through strong, innovative and creative leadership that will support the revitalization and growth in our sector for all members, within the context of an ever-competitive global market. The successful candidate will be integral in defining the Associations next multi-year strategic plan.
Our ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the mineral exploration and development sector. They are dynamic, a strategic thinker, an excellent communicator, have a strong background in both federal and provincial government relations and have the ability to form progressive relationships with our stakeholder groups.
The successful candidate will be passionate about advocating for the B.C.-based mineral exploration and development sector, and will continue to communicate the importance of this work with the sense of passion, pride and confidence that has long been a hallmark of our sector.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provides industry leadership and guidance in support of AME’s mission, vision and guiding principles
- Works with Board of Directors, Executive Committee and AME members to understand and align member interests, and develop and implement a representative and balanced strategic plan and key priority areas
- Executes AME’s strategic plan, key priority areas, and emerging issues, through collaboration, delegation and partnerships
Member of the Board of Directors & the Executive Committee
- Contributes as an AME Director, provides advice, guidance and recommendations, as required and requested, to the Board and committees of the Board
- Implements the directives of the Board and the Executive Committee
- Supports AME’s Executive Committee in the development of the annual succession plan for the Board of Directors and Executive Committee
Resource & Staff Management & Development
- Ensures AME has the necessary resources (staff, equipment, systems, office etc.) required to successfully execute and complete AME’s strategic plan
- Provides management leadership and mentorship to AME staff and consultants to ensure that AME’s strategic objectives and priorities are achieved, and that each group understands the common goal of AME
- Creates a supportive and positive working environment representative of AME’s mission, vision, guiding principles and priorities
- Implements programs that positively support AME’s employee performance and professional development
- Effectively manages and mentors senior staff to be resourceful, adaptable, flexible and successful in their roles
- Effectively manages AME’s financial resources to achieve results and add value to the Association in the interests of members
- Develops and delivers a budget that matches resources with AME members’ priorities, Board and Executive Committee directives and AME’s strategic plan
- Reviews and approves quarterly financials; communicates regularly with AME’s Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee to ensure fiscal responsibility and accountability
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication
- Represents and advocates on behalf of AME to a variety of different stakeholders, understanding and respecting their competing and diverse interests
- Acts as AME’s ambassador and main external representative engaging, communicating and participating with all stakeholders on behalf of members
- Leads, advocates, and develops partnerships with stakeholders in support of AME’s mission, vision, guiding principles and strategic priorities
- Maintains positive and productive relationships with a broad range of audiences including AME members, industry and business partners, government leaders and officials, aboriginal communities and leaders, non-governmental stakeholders and the public
- Attends meetings, conferences, consultations, etc. to ensure AME’s members interests are represented, understood, recognized and protected; continuously works to ensure that members are aware of these activities
- Other duties as required or directed by the Board of Directors and Executive Committee
Education, Skills & Requirements
- A Masters degree and/or equivalent experience related to the industry.
- 10+ years of direct experience in natural resources sector.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to plan, manage and implement strategies and concepts.
- Strong and effective communication and presentation skills (verbal and written), with the ability to deliver concise, consistent and effective messages to diverse audiences (internal and external).
- Demonstrated success in a leadership capacity. Experience in effectively engaging, leading, aligning, and motivating multiple stakeholders, including staff and volunteers.
- Political astuteness, judgment and policy sense; ability to strategically position AME on key issues maintain effective and productive relationships with AME members, business and industry partners, Aboriginal groups, governments and communities.
- Proven ability to participate and lead research, analysis, reporting and communication on political, technical and financial information, legislation, and public policy related to mineral exploration, resource development and regulatory matters.
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge using office systems and computer hardware and software, including specific knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Ability and willingness to travel approximately 20% of the time to engage members and stakeholders throughout British Columbia and Canada, and internationally.
