Manager, Environmental Policy



Job Description

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) provides a voice for Canada’s wood, pulp and paper producers nationally and internationally in government, trade, and environmental affairs. Canada’s forest products industry is a $67 billion dollar a year industry that represents 2% of Canada’s GDP. The industry is one of Canada’s largest employers, operating in 200 forest-dependent communities from coast to coast, and directly employing 230,000 Canadians across the country.


Position Summary

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting policy and legislative reviews and analyses, making recommendations on policy issues, implementing policy decisions and responding to inquiries regarding industry policies, programs and initiatives. Of primary focus will be policy areas related to environmental regulations, climate change, and forest management.


Areas of Responsibility

  • Perform and coordinate environmental policy reviews and analysis, including management of related special projects.

  • Gather, manage and analyze environmental and economic data related to forest management and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

  • Create fact sheets, briefings and slide decks as requested.

  • Support FPAC public policy development and consultation.

  • Formulate policy advice, options and recommendations for resolution of policy implications.

  • Anticipate and identify emerging issues that affect the environmental policies and FPAC programs.

  • Meet, consult, negotiate, and correspond with government officials, organization representatives and stakeholders to explain and receive comment on policy proposals and implementations.


Critical Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate both in writing and verbally.

  • Superior data management and analysis skills with the ability to gather data from different sources, synthesize the data in MS format and perform an analysis of the dataset.

  • Superior negotiating and conflict resolution skills and the ability to professionally respond to issues as they arise.

  • Strong time-management skills.


Knowledge & Expertise

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma with expertise in environmental policy.

  • Experience as a policy advisor or working in a policy or legislative environment will be viewed as favourable.

  • Solid understanding of government policy-making and legislative processes with the ability to interpret and explain legislation.

  • Knowledge of the forest sector in Canada, principles of forest management and sustainability.

  • High degree of resourcefulness, flexibility, and adaptability.

  • Being fluently bilingual is not required, but would be an asset.
