The Institute for Performance and Learning, formerly the Canadian Society for Training and Development, is a not-for-profit, membership organization for workplace learning professionals. With over 2,000 members across 16 chapters from coast to coast, the Institute for Performance and Learning supports and builds a growing network of Canadian workplace learning professionals though affiliation, professional development and accreditation. The organization offers 2 professional designations: Certified Training and Development Professional (CTDP) and Certified Training Practitioner (CTP) which are supported by robust Competencies for Performance and Learning Professionals.

Job Description


The Executive Director/President of the Institute for Performance and Learning, formerly CSTD, reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for developing and driving the strategic direction and priorities of the association as agreed to by the Board. The President has overall accountability for operationalizing and ensuring execution of the Institute’s strategic priorities. The Executive Director regularly advises and engages the Board as required in the day to day operations of the Institute.
  • Leads the development of the strategic plan in partnership with the Board, to increase the focus, impact and reach of the association
  • Develops a long-term financial strategy for sustainability and growth
  • Develops and manages annual operation plan ensuring effective execution and attainment of key performance indicators, reporting regularly to the Board on progress
  • Develops and maintains brand and reputation through effective marketing and communication strategies and standards
  • Brings a growth-oriented, business focused approach to leading
  • Provides leadership to grow into a bilingual (French/English) association
  • Supports the Board in ensuring efficacy in governance structure
  • Creates an optimal member experience by delivering value-added services and programs to members
  • Manages all human capital and talent management practices and processes while creating a positive work culture built on trust, collaboration, innovation and performance
  • Stays current on emerging trends in learning and development and represent the community on these issues as they arise
  • Advocates for the Learning and Development profession in the Canadian and international landscape
  • University degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Management, Learning and Development, Organizational Development/Behaviour)
  • A minimum of ten years’ experience in a senior leadership role
  • Experience within membership organizations and/or associations and with board governance
  • Previous experience in a Learning and Development leadership role and strong knowledge of profession
  • Strong industry reputation
  • CTDP designation preferred
  • Certified association executive (CAE) preferred
  • Bilingual (English and French)
