Chief Executive Officer

Position Summary

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for all aspects of ACPM’s affairs   while driving the advocacy agenda and ensuring a strong member and volunteer base.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy

The CEO is responsible for the general management and direction of ACPM’s business and affairs including strategic direction, budgeting and human resources. Specific tasks include:

  • Develops annual business plan that describes the organization’s growth plans, key issues, objectives, and operating budgets. Presents the annual business plan to the Board of Directors for approval. Monitor performance against business plan and implement appropriate action plans in response to variances.
  • Accountable for successful execution and forward-looking strategy for the ACPM National Conference; the premier pension event in Canada and a major source of revenue.
  • Building, motivating, developing and retaining a talented team capable of achieving the organization’s business plans and in consideration of management succession.
  • The CEO will develop and nurture relationships with members, sponsors, strategic partners and allies, as well as media and governments.
  • Partner with the Board to develop a vision and strategic plan.
  • Act as a professional advisor to the Board on all aspects of the organization.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of relevant committees.
  • Draft organization policies for Board approval and recommend changes through the Chairs of the Governance & Nominating, Audit & Finance and Human Resources Committees.


Membership and Volunteers

As a non-profit organization, the ACPM’s s strength is in our membership base, many of whom volunteer extensively. The CEO is responsible for developing a membership growth strategy as well as managing many volunteer efforts. Specific tasks include:

  • Develop membership strategies to increase the member base and revenue, develop membership value proposition.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with Executive members and continue to expand this program. Many executive members are also key sponsors and offer tremendous support to ACPM.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service
  • Manage many volunteer committees (such as the National Policy Committee and the National Conference Planning Committee) and continually evaluate committee structure, effectiveness, and succession (i.e. committee members, Vice-Chairs and Chairs).


Advocacy

The CEO will support the Board and committee members in their roles as spokespersons for the ACPM. Specific tasks include:

  • Building relationships with various stakeholders such as plan sponsors, pension regulators and governments across Canada.
  • Building relationships with other organizations that involve themselves with Canadian pension plans.
  • Coordinate meetings with the Chairs of the various applicable ACPM committees such as the National Policy Committee.
  • Manage ACPM process when responding to both public and private consultation papers.


Scope

Financial Responsibilities – ACPM has an annual budget of approximately $1.5 million and has hundreds of members across the country.

Organization Responsibilities – The CEO is responsible for the leadership of the National Office which consists of staff of 4 including, Director, Marketing and Communications, Manager, Administration and Stakeholder Relations, Administrative Assistant and an Event Planner; and is located in Toronto, Ontario.


Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in a related field
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles for a membership oriented non-profit association with high reliance on volunteers
  • Advocacy skills and experience would be a definite asset
  • A passion for service to ACPM’s stakeholders (Members, Executive Members, Sponsors)
  • A passion for pensions and advocacy, understanding the issues and opportunities related to the retirement income system
  • Experienced spokesperson who can communicate with impact to diverse audiences
  • Team player who can establish and maintain positive working relationships to achieve ACPM’s goals
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Canadian retirement system would be an asset
  • Highly motivated, entrepreneurial with the ability to balance multiple priorities, work well under pressure and develop new ways to improve operations and create new opportunities
  • Operates with the highest ethics
  • Bilingualism is an asset
