Director, Strategic Issues

The Municipal Pension Plan (MPP or the Plan) is a public sector, multi-employer, defined-benefit pension plan serving more than 375,000 members across multiple sectors including local government, health, education, and social services. MPP is the sixth-largest defined-benefit pension plan in Canada, and the largest in BC—with assets in excess of $66 billion. The Plan is governed by the Municipal Pension Board of Trustees, a 32-member governing body appointed by Plan employers and members, acting in the best interests of Plan members and beneficiaries.

The Board and its committees are supported on administrative and board governance matters by the Municipal Pension Board Secretariat, who are employed by the BC Pension Corporation. Day-to-day pension administration is also provided by the BC Pension Corporation. Investment management is provided by the BC Investment Management Corporation, while legal and actuarial services are provided by contractors.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director, Strategic Issues is responsible for providing strategic support and policy advice to the Municipal Pension Plan Board of Trustees. The Director, Strategic Issues is a board employee and a senior member of a small management team with wide-ranging responsibilities. The Director, Strategic Issues acts in a confidential capacity to the Board and provides expert professional advice regarding pension plan strategy, design, risk management and compliance.

The ideal candidate brings a track record of success dealing with technical issues surrounding defined benefit pensions as a lawyer, actuary, strategic pension advisor, or pension administrator. A hands-on and critical thinker with advanced interpersonal skills, he/she will have the project management skills to help orchestrate the complex delivery of a wide variety of technical services and can provide advice regarding federal and provincial pension benefits legislation, strategy, compliance and risk.
