The Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) is the principal, national, public voice for ophthalmology in Canada and the recognized authority on eye and vision care. COS works to improve eye and vision care standards for all Canadians through the work of its Board of Directors, Councils and Committees, and ties with national and international ophthalmological and eye care organizations. COS works collaboratively with government, other national and international specialty societies, our provincial associations, subspecialty societies and the academic community to advocate for health policy in Canada in the area of eye and vision health. As the national membership organization representing the Eye Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, COS is an affiliate of the Canadian Medical Association and an accredited provider of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), as recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Please note: The COS office is located in Ottawa, ON. While the COS team is currently working remotely during the pandemic, when it is safe to do so, there are expectations for this position to visit the office in Ottawa for certain tasks and/or team activities.

JOB SUMMARY
Reporting directly to and working closely with the Executive Director/CEO of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS), the Manager, Continuing Professional Development, manages all aspects of the COS Continuing Professional Development Program and is a key leadership position within the organization. The Manager is responsible for leading Canadian ophthalmology’s premier education event, the COS Annual Meeting, supports the Sally Letson Symposium, and oversees all work related to other accredited learning opportunities. This individual works closely with the Chair of the Annual Meeting Chair and Planning Committee, the Chair of the CPD Council and Maintenance of Certification Committee, and with many volunteer committees and working groups. This individual partners with key internal and external stakeholders to support Royal College of Physicians’ and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accreditation guidelines, and is responsible for the COS Practice Resource Centre.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CPD program
In accordance with RCPSC accreditation guidelines, the Manager, CPD, leads the CPD program from planning through execution and evaluation. This includes developing and monitoring budgets, conducting needs assessments to develop educational programming, identifying learning opportunities (including co-developed programs/co-developed accredited symposia), working with key physician groups and targeted industry partners to develop a variety of learning activities for CPD credit.
This individual oversees the COS Annual Meeting and Exhibition, other accredited co-developed programs, and supports the Sally Letson Symposium.
This individual is responsible for overseeing the Practice Resource Cenre, posting education-related information to the COS Website, reporting to the COS Board of Directors, writing grants for CPD initiatives, and reviewing and providing input to COS reports, as required.

Committee Liaison and Scientific Program Management
This individual serves on the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Council and the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Committeel and provides strategic direction, planning, and the day-to-day support to the Councils. This individual serves as the primary staff partner to the Chair of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee (AMPC) and supports the committee in the development and delivery of the scientific program of the Annual Meeting.

Accreditation
This individual manages the accreditation portfolio, which includes: maximizing strategic relationships and partnerships with key stakeholders, developing and overseeing the Maintenance of Certification process, including processing of applications for accreditation from physician organizations, reviewing and approving applications for accredited activities by local and provincial ophthalmological societies and other physician organizations. This individual also prepares reports for the RCPSC, including the overall re-accreditation of the COS to ensure status as an Accredited CPD Provider is maintained.

Budget & Human Resource Management
This individual is responsible for the Education department budget, ensuring timely invoicing, and monitoring and reporting on the budget throughout the year. This individual manages a team of 3 individuals.
 

EXPERIENCE
• Minimum 5 years’ related experience in Continuing Professional Development or Education field, preferably with a National Specialty Society or non-profit organization.
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field.

• Exceptional communicator in all mediums with superior interpersonal and oral/written communications skills.
• Bilingualism (French language) considered a definite asset.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and successfully manage multiple competing priorities and deadlines.
• Superior organizational and project management skills with the demonstrated ability to function effectively in a changing environment.
• Ability to meet fixed deadlines, initiate and follow-up on actions.

This is a permanent, full-time position. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. Some travel may be required.
