From its beginnings in 1926, the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) is the national organization that supports more than 17,000 occupational therapists (OTs) who work or study in Canada. Located in Ottawa, with 25 staff and regional chapters in BC, Quebec and soon the Territories, its Mission is to advance excellence in occupational therapy, ensuring it is valued and accessible across Canada. The CAOT provides services, products, events and networking opportunities to assist occupational therapists in achieving excellence in their professional practice. In addition, CAOT provides national leadership to actively develop and promote the client-centred profession of occupational therapy in Canada and internationally. CAOT serves and supports its members to provide the highest quality care and is recognized within the Canadian health system and the wider community as an authority in occupational therapy, engaging internationally as a leader of the profession.

Based in Ottawa, we are seeking an experienced, progressive and dynamic individual to lead this respected organization. Reporting to and collaborating with the President and Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) is responsible and accountable for the Association’s overall performance through the implementation of the strategic plan, achievement of corporate goals, and effective development and stewardship of corporate resources.  S/he will bring thoughtful guidance in executing and delivering the organization’s strategic objectives, which include strengthening the identity, position and voice of the occupational therapy profession, ensuring OTs are prepared to practice in a rapidly evolving health care system, and achieving effective engagement with members and key stakeholders. The ED develops strong relationships with provincial associations and regulatory bodies, facilitates the delivery of a solid member value proposition, and implements communications strategies to raise awareness of the profession with current and potential members, the general public and all of its stakeholders.

As an inclusive and empowering leader, the ideal candidate will have successfully led people, strategy and change in a complex, multi-stakeholder and multi-issue environment.  Possessing a graduate degree in a health-related discipline, s/he will have demonstrated abilities in developing and enhancing relationships with stakeholders and partners, building consensus, and in motivating people.  Candidates will bring superior communications and change management expertise, along with a successful record in advocacy and government relations.  Experience working in a senior leadership role in the not-for-profit or national association/NGO sector, ideally related to healthcare, would be an asset. S/he will possess excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills and will be an effective and transparent communicator in all respects, operating collegially and collaboratively at all levels.   The ability to communicate effectively with advanced oral and written skills in English is essential; intermediate oral and written skills in French are a definite asset.
