The City Manager is the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the City of Saint John and, as such, is responsible for the leadership of all City employees and service areas, the delivery of municipal services and collaboration with Council and community stakeholders. Service areas include; Growth and Community Development, Public Safety, Transportation and Environment, Water and Waste Water, Finance and Administration and Corporate Services, all of which are aligned to support and enrich the quality of life for our 67,000 citizens.
The City Manager stewards the City’s annual operating, water and sewerage utility, and capital budgets of over $250 million. Responsibilities also include strengthening key strategic relationships with our community, including businesses, government, and the non-profit sector.
Essential Qualifications
The successful candidate will exhibit key competencies essential to success in the role, including strong and effective leadership skills; well-developed management skills; high-level collaboration and engagement skills; a powerful and effective communication style; the capacity to inspire effort, trust, and confidence among employees and the community; and advanced strategic thinking skills.
The successful candidate should also possess a thorough understanding of strategic planning, finance, human resources management and operations in a multifaceted organization. Experience and training in community/economic/business development is a considerable asset for this role.
Ideally, the successful candidate will have gained the above competencies through post-secondary education in a related field and a minimum of 15 years progressive experience in a public and/or private organization at least 5 to 10 of which were in a senior leadership capacity. A proven record of accomplishment running a multi-disciplinary private or public sector organization is essential.
