Chief of Legal Strategy

Salary Range $186,856.26 - $225,785.93 per annum

Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Attorney General as the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and ensures that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. Areas of legal advice provided by LSB include but are not limited to: constitutional law; Aboriginal law; resource, environment and land law; revenue and taxation law; health and social services law; finance, commercial and transportation law; justice and education law; and labour, employment and human rights law.

In this newly created leadership position, the Chief of Legal Strategy (CLS) will provide strategic advice and guidance on matters of law and policy, and ensure that LSB's strategic objectives are achieved. You are an innovative leader and tactical thinker, focused on quality, consistency and staying apprised of all significant legal actions and files involving the government, informing the Assistant Deputy Attorney General of the status of legal affairs and providing guidance to LSB and government on legal matters. You will oversee the development of LSB’s knowledge management strategy, considering the impacts on legislation, policy and programs, and leveraging strategic partnerships to influence the desired outcomes. The CLS is experienced in the structures, processes and practices of legal services in government and skilled at working with Ministers, executives within ministries and across government.

The successful candidate will be a member of (or be eligible for immediate membership in) the Law Society of British Columbia and have a broad knowledge of the law and an understanding of the importance and value of independent legal advice. The Chief of Legal Strategy must possess: a record of excellence as a lawyer; excellent problem-solving skills with a results-focus; demonstrated competency in leading others; a record of strategic orientation and an ability to understand complex issues and devise strategies that meet the client’s interests; and, outstanding skills in influence and persuasion.
