Lead, Support and Grow BC’s $3.2 Billion Hotel Industry

Reporting to the Board, and working closely with the Chair, the new CEO for the British Columbia Hotels Association will bring leadership and guidance to this venerable organization. Working closely with the Board, he or she will have an opportunity to develop a vision, and a multi-year strategy for growing the organization and developing new partnerships in and outside of the hospitality sector. The new CEO will forge meaningful relationships with all levels of government and become the leading voice of hospitality for the province of BC. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your unique blend of strategic and operational leadership and experience to build on the solid foundations of the BCHA and lead the organization into the future.

The Organization:

Established in 1916, The British Columbia Hotel Association is the advocate and spokesperson for the interests of the Hotel Industry throughout British Columbia. With over 600 hotel members and 200 associate members, the BCHA represents an industry with revenue in excess of $3.2 Billion, 80,000 rooms and more than 60,000 employees. The BCHA is a significant contributor to BC’s $13.8 billion tourism sector and they have members in nearly every community in BC. As the advocate to all levels of government, BCHA is acknowledged as the champion of hotel-related issues, including taxation, tourism marketing, corporate relations, labour and consumer services.

The Role:

The President and CEO is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the British Columbia Hotel Association according to the strategic direction set in collaboration with the Board of Directors. With 10 or more years of progressive business and or association leadership experience, the new CEO will bring proven skills in leadership, operational management, HR, financial management and communications. He or she will be highly collaborative, a proven relationship-builder and networker.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the British Columbia Hotel Association.
  • Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the British Columbia Hotel Association.
  • Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Directors on all aspects of the Association’s activities.
  • Direct, manage and lead all government relations activities of the Association.
  • Direct, manage and lead all activities of the membership programs.
  • Foster effective team work between the Board and the President and CEO and between the President and CEO and staff.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the Association and lodging industry.
  • Represent the association at Provincial and National events and activities.

Operational planning and management

  • Develop an operational plan which incorporates the goals and objectives of the Association’s strategic plan.
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the Association.
  • Oversee and manage policy and procedures for the organization.
  • Provide the Board with meeting agendas and supporting materials.

Program planning and management

  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Association’s programs and services.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, execution and evaluation of special projects and events.

Human resources planning and management                                                                                         

  • Manage staffing requirements and oversee best practices in HR policy and procedures. including recruitment, performance management, health and safety, coaching, discipline and terminations.

Financial planning and management

  • Work with Board and staff to develop and manage annual budgets and funding strategies for research and programs.
  • Administer the funds of the Association according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the Association.
  • Provide the Board with comprehensive, monthly reports on the revenues and expenditures of the Association.
  • Ensure that the Association complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments.

 

Community relations, Marketing and Advocacy

  • Develop communications strategies and tools and oversee all internal and external communications.
  • Be the industry advocate at the provincial level with British Columbia Legislature officials and stakeholders.
  • Build trust and collaborate with all members through effective communications strategies.

Risk management

  • Identify and evaluate the risks to the Association’s members, property, finances, goodwill, and image and implement measures to control risks.
  • Ensure that the Board of Directors and the Association carries appropriate and adequate insurance coverage, including Directors and Officer Liability and Key Person.

 

Qualifications                                                                                                                                    

  • 10 years of progressive business or association leadership experience
  • Bachelor’s degree, Graduate Degree in Government Relations or Business Administration an asset.
  • Must be fluent in English, Fluency in French or other languages is an asset.
  • Computer literate including MS programs, Word, Excel, Power Point
