Executive Director-Gastown Business Improvement Society

The Gastown Business Improvement Society (GBIS) is a non-profit society that was created in 1989 as an organizing mechanism used by business owners and commercial property owners to work together to promote and enhance Gastown’s unique assets, improve conditions for businesses operating in the area and improve the quality of life for those who work in and visit the area.

The GBIS is governed by a volunteer board of directors comprised of both property and business owners from within the area who represent a broad range of members and community stakeholders.

An opportunity exists for a talented and strategic community leader and driver of economic development to assume the role of Executive Director, taking on the challenge of being the principal business community advocate for this unique, complex and highly sought-after area. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be accountable for creating a strong and proactive vision and strategy for the next chapter of Gastown and developing and implementing effective strategies that flow from that vision. Promoting the area’s goods and services to local and regional markets, advocating for improvements that will enhance the overall visitor experience, and continually working to attract and support the local business mix will ensure ongoing excellence in the offering.

Leading a small team of staff, and located in office space in Gastown, this is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned and serious community builder to make a tangible contribution to the development of an historic, well-established and flourishing defined commercial area with a future even more incredible than its past. As one of the gems of Vancouver, Gastown’s next Business Improvement Society leader will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to leave a significant legacy, not only for Gastown, but for the region as well.
