The Ministry of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation was created in November 2020 to support the growth of BC’s tech sector, champion innovation across the economy, nurture small businesses, and support economic development throughout the province. The ministry also promotes BC internationally as a preferred place to invest and do business.

The Innovation, Technology and Investment Capital Division is responsible for driving the growth and development of innovation and technology with a focus on sectors and industries where BC has developed an advantage (e.g. life sciences, emergency management, clean tech, artificial intelligence and quantum and virtual reality technologies) and to support growth in more traditional sectors.  The Division also has oversight of the Innovate BC Crown corporation and the Innovation Commissioner.

The Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) provides overall leadership to the Division. This executive position focuses on helping accelerate the innovation in B.C.’s economy to catalyze future opportunities in core and emerging sectors.  This role is responsible for developing policy and delivering services that support businesses, sustainable communities, and creating opportunities in technology sector for under-represented groups. The ADM builds strong relationships with technology and innovation leaders, stakeholders and communities throughout the province and Canada to advance B.C.’s priorities. Partnerships and collaboration with academic institutions, research institutions, First Nations communities, local governments, other provincial governments, and the federal government are a vital part of this role.

The incumbent is an experienced, dynamic, and innovative senior leader with outstanding skills in influence and persuasion, strategic thinking, and ability to build strong partnership with a broad spectrum of stakeholders. Success in this role involves experience with change management and an understanding of the challenges, complexities, and issues inherent in economic development. In addition to the experience required, the ideal candidate will have a post-secondary education in public policy, economics, business, or a related field.
