Director Communications

Fertilizer Canada is the industry association representing Canadian manufacturers, wholesalers and retail distributors of nitrogen, phosphate, potash and sulphur fertilizer used in the production of agricultural crops that help feed the world.

The Director of Communications has the responsibility to take the Association’s policy positions and translate them into high level, communications materials which complement the strategic asks for MPs, Senators, MLAs, MPPs, government officials and other stakeholders.

The Director will lead the development of an integrated communications strategy to increase awareness and appreciation of the Canadian fertilizer industry with key stakeholders as well as the media. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive important outcomes in proactive and reactive media relations, internal communications and thought leadership pieces.
  • Build a network of, and establish strong rapport with, media and other key audiences.
  • Oversee the development of goals, strategies, and implementation plans to execute comprehensive marketing campaigns.
  • Provide leadership in a small team of communications professionals (including external consultants) and lead the execution of all communications plans and activities.
  • Provide advice to Fertilizer Canada’s Sr. Management team, member committees, Board of Directors and other members on communications trends, strategies and approaches.
  • Support Fertilizer Canada’s corporate and strategic initiatives through participation on internal and external committees.
  • Support Fertilizer Canada’s brand management and ensure consistency in applications of that brand.
  • Accountable for maintaining high quality communications to enhance Fertilizer Canada’s reputation including the creation of products such as: website, corporate presentations, infographics, annual report, advertisements, videos and other media.
  • Lead the writing and editing of a wide range of compelling communications materials and content, including; media releases, newsletters, blog posts, creative content.
  • Monitor relevant media, government and third-party stakeholders for relevant communications initiatives, programs, etc.
  • Provide strategic communications advice and mentorship to junior communications staff.
  • Manage and support direct reports when/where applicable.
  • Act as spokesperson as required with French media. 
  • Provide communications support to Plant Nutrition Canada (a non-profit organization overseen by Fertilizer Canada).
  • Participates in the internal budgeting process and develops/manages communications-specific budgets. 

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • At least 5 years in a comparable senior communications position.  Preference may be given to individuals with a background in journalism or with a significant media relations background. 
  • University degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a similar field would be preferred.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.  Bilingualism is strongly preferred & bilingual candidates will be screened first.
  • Adept at creating & editing written content - strong attention to detail.
  • Experience in developing and implementing comprehensive communications strategies with demonstrable results.
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure to manage multiple competing priorities within tight deadlines, and balance several, disparate tasks.
  • Willingness to work during off hours & weekends to respond to emerging media issues and enquiries.
  • Strong knowledge of government relations, public policy, political process, and current affairs.  Previous experience working in a political office would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the agriculture sector in Canada.  Previous experience working in the agricultural sector would be considered an asset.
