Ministry of Attorney General and Ministry Responsible for Housing
The Ministry of Attorney General is responsible for delivering a wide range of programs including: administrative tribunals; civil and family justice services; sheriff and court administration services; legal advice and services to government; legal aid; prosecution services; protection and promotion of human rights; compliance and enforcement as well as distribution; and investigation of complaints made by inmates at provincial correctional centres and probationers supervised in the community. The Ministry is also responsible for providing British Columbians access to more affordable, safe and appropriate housing through policy and programs, technical codes and standards, and services for landlords and tenants. Further the Ministry of Attorney General has oversight for Multiculturalism and government’s Anti-Racism initiatives.
The Deputy Attorney General is responsible for supporting the Attorney General in their role as Chief Law Officer of the Crown and as Minister of Justice. The Deputy Attorney General provides overall leadership and direction for the Ministry which provides legal services in two separate and distinct areas – the independent prosecution of criminal matters and the provision of legal services to government. This role ensures that the administration of public affairs is in accordance with the law and that Cabinet actions are legally and constitutionally valid. The Deputy Attorney General is also responsible for the administration of the Court system and ensures the provision of facilities, registry services and security, to British Columbia courts. Through the Associate Deputy Minister of Housing and Multiculturalism, the Deputy Attorney General also has oversight of Housing and Homelessness as well as Multiculturalism and government’s Anti-Racism initiatives.
The successful candidate will have senior public-sector leadership experience in a large policy and legislative-focused organization combined with a proven record of leading, developing, coaching, and mentoring a high functioning executive team. A membership in good standing with the Bar of British Columbia is required as well as significant experience in the practice of law with demonstrated knowledge in Justice Policy. Further, experience in both the private and public sector practice of law is preferred.
