The Ministry of Education’s role is to provide leadership, set standards and provide funding to the K-12 education system through governance, legislation, policy, curriculum, assessments, and education programs. Indigenous Education aligns with commitments to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, and the Draft Principles that Guide the Province of British Columbia’s Relationship with Indigenous People.

Reporting to the Deputy Minister, the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), Indigenous Education and Reconciliation, will fill a fundamental role supporting government’s reconciliation mandate in education. This position is responsible for the education policies and programs for Indigenous Education in the K to 12 education system. The ADM will provide direction to the Division and sector by translating the vision to goals and objectives for Indigenous Education. They will create a concrete reconciliation strategy that delivers outcomes and supports change through leadership and strong sector relationships.

The successful candidate is a proven leader and has a solid background in government policy and knowledge of education systems and programs. They will have experience working collaboratively with Indigenous communities and a firm understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to Indigenous education. The ideal candidate will have a university degree in a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference for this position will be given to applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Métis, or Inuit with the required combination of education and experience.
