Senior Manager, Communications
Are you a dynamic professional communicator? We’re looking for a skilled media and tech savvy Senior Manager to develop strategy, deliver compelling messages, and deploy resources that advance our communications objectives, support our CEO and Board communications needs, and promote OAO members as primary care eye care providers in Ontario.
JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the CEO, the Senior Manager, Communications develops and facilitates delivery of OAO’s communication initiatives with members, stakeholders, and target audiences. The Senior Manager, Communications is primarily responsible for media/media relations, digital and social media, crisis and issue management as well as managing vendor relationships in design and public relations. The Senior Manager, Communications is a critical member of the senior team and is an integral contributor to strategy and implementation.
Note: OAO follows all public health directives and will accommodate working from home during pandemic surges such as that currently in effect for the Omicron variant.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Located in downtown Toronto, the Senior Manager, Communications is a full-time position accountable for creating, coordinating and supporting campaigns and messaging that promote OAO members as primary care eye care providers in Ontario. A key partner for the government relations function, the CEO and Board of Directors, the Senior Manager, Communications provides both strategic and tactical solutions to reach target audiences through media, spokespeople, digital platforms and compellingly crafted content.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Media Relations
- Develops and implements media campaigns designed for and targeted to members and stakeholders
- Leads media outreach in collaboration with Government Relations, CEO and Board
- Monitors media to identify and respond to issues related to OAO
- Develops plans for risk mitigation and public relations advice to CEO and Board
- Manages news releases including content, spokespeople and outlets for distribution
- Digital Communications
- Approves content posted to website and social media
- Reviews analytics and reports on key metrics against goals
- Develops social media campaigns and communications to reach members and stakeholders
- Executive and Board Support
- Provides counsel and support for Board and CEO communications needs with key messages for delivery including:
- Briefing documents
- Media/press
- Interviews
- Speeches
- Provides marketing and communication counsel for strategic initiatives and events such as conferences
- Crafts internal staff and key volunteer messages on behalf of CEO
- Provides counsel and support for Board and CEO communications needs with key messages for delivery including:
- Issues Management
- Develops crisis management communications plan including:
- team mobilization to address issues
- communication plan, mode, timing, and sequence of messages
- key messages for internal and external audiences
- coordination with internal and external partners and stakeholders
- Develops crisis management communications plan including:
- Resource Management
- Direct supervision of staff, as assigned by the CEO
- Budget and relationship management with outsourced functions such as agencies, designers, graphic artists
- Cross-functional and indirect supervision of team members for special or coordinated projects
- Marketing
- Lead marketing material development (in-house or outsourced) promoting OAO and its members
- Identify opportunities for testimonials or educational opportunities regarding OAO for further development by Coordinator
KEY RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports to CEO
- Works to support Board Chair, Board of Directors
- Senior Director of Government Relations and Communications and related staff (key internal partners)
- Supervises staff, as assigned by the CEO

- External agencies, designers
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or related field
- 6+ years of pertinent work experience, including media relations
- Strong writing skills (knowledge of CP style) and ability to write engagingly on behalf of others and for diverse audiences – portfolio may be requested
- Experience in campaign development
- Demonstrated experience in digital communications in a “hands-on” or supervisory capacity (including website, social media, SEO and analytics
- Knowledgeable and experienced in design and visual creative concepts; experience in either managing people with design or outsourcing design
- Additional software experience (such as video editing, digital organizing platforms, etc.) are an asset
- Experience in a professional association or member-based organization an asset
