Wheelchair Rugby was invented in 1977 in Winnipeg by a group of quadriplegic athletes who were looking for an alternative to wheelchair basketball. They wanted a sport which would allow players with reduced arm and hand function to participate equally. The sport they created, originally called Murderball, is now known as Wheelchair Rugby.
Responsible to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the Senior Staff Person for Wheelchair Rugby Canada (WRC). The CEO is responsible for the overall management and administration of the organization and all areas pertaining to sport, including athlete development, coaching development, official’s development, event hosting and equipment. The CEO provides leadership and guidance to the Domestic Programs Committee and acts as liaison with Sport Canada, Own the Podium, Canadian Paralympic Committee, Coaching Association of Canada and other national sport organizations, multi-sport and multi-games organizations and other related agencies and organizations. The CEO is a non-voting officer of the Corporation.
As the ideal CEO for WRC you bring a track record of senior leadership experience, proven ability working with and reporting to a Board of Directors, a strong background in strategic planning and strategy setting, and an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the Canadian sport system. You understand how to build and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships with agencies and individuals within the national and international sport system. You are a consensus builder who can bring diverse parties together in support of a shared vision and are committed to ensuring a professional, high-quality and positive image for WRC and it’s athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, programs and events. Peers describe you as an enthusiastic, engaging leader and mentor, that has demonstrated a commitment to building equitable, diverse teams and fostering a culture of inclusivity that allows your teams to perform at their highest capabilities. Your financial acumen, experience supporting sponsorship and fundraising activities and ability to provide guidance and leadership when developing new programs would be considered strong assets, as would your ability to communicate in both official languages.
