The Ontario College of Teachers is seeking an exceptional leader who personifies the College’s mission and is committed to protecting students and upholding the high standards of professionalism in teaching across the province.
Established in 1997 under the Ontario College of Teachers Act, the College licenses, governs and regulates Ontario’s teaching profession (roughly 230,000 registrants) and inspires public confidence by protecting the public interest.
It is an exciting time at the College. Recent legislative changes (Bill 229 proclaimed in 2021) have resulted in a restructured, modern governance model that is designed to streamline its operations, enabling it to operate more effectively and efficiently in meeting its mandate of student protection. With a smaller, more diverse, and skills-based Council in place, including members of the profession and the public, the College is well-positioned to build on its good work in the service of the public interest. The College’s new governance structure is also serving as a contemporary standard for professional selfregulation in Ontario and around the world. As Registrar & CEO, reporting to Council, you provide overall strategic, operational, and internal and external leadership and implement the direction of Council in line with the Act and the College’s vision and purpose. Your focus and priority: upholding the College’s mission by placing students’ interests and well-being first by regulating and promoting excellence in teaching.
To this end, you provide clear direction, working closely with the leadership team and the Council to deliver and foster best practices in a range of areas, including registration and certification, investigations, human resources, and financial management. With a focus on continuous improvement and risk management, you collaborate with committees, panels, partners and members to ensure that the profession evolves as the scope, standards, and expectations of teachers evolve. Internally, you lead a diverse team of approximately 200 staff, set the tone for an equitable and inclusive culture, and drive operational and service excellence; while externally, you build trusted and respectful relationships with members of the public, staff, Council, teachers, and other key stakeholders.
As the ideal candidate, you are an authentic leader who builds, inspires, and models trust, professionalism and the character befitting a Registrar of one of the largest professional regulators in Canada. Your strategic foresight and extensive experience as a senior executive will serve you well, as will your experience supporting a Board in a regulated profession. You bring to the College insights into current issues, legislative trends, policies, regulations, and laws governing important professions, like the teaching profession in Ontario. As a transformational leader, you champion innovation, sound financial stewardship, and performance excellence. Fairness, inclusion, and equity are central to your leadership philosophy. Eligibility for membership in good standing with the College and the ability to communicate in both official languages are desirable assets.
