The original Elizabeth Fry Society of Canada was founded in 1939 by Canadian Member of Parliament, Agnes Macphail, in Vancouver. The Elizabeth Fry Society groups work on issues affecting women, girls and gender diverse people in the justice system. The societies take their name from prison reformer Elizabeth Fry. As the first Elizabeth Fry Society in Canada, Elizabeth Fry in Vancouver (EFry) has long felt responsibility to step into gaps to create and support first-ever programs and to advocate for systemic changes to benefit vulnerable women throughout BC and across Canada.

Since founding, EFry has grown to an organization of 180 staff and 500+ volunteers. It’s succeeded in establishing female prisoners’ rights to single gender detention facilities, winning acceptance for in-prison schooling, founding Vancouver’s methadone program and developing community alternatives to prison that have been adopted nationwide. Today, EFry provides support across the spectrum of justice system involvement – from at risk through incarceration to the transition back to independent living.

EFry has built a strong foundation of support services for vulnerable and marginalized women and their children in the Lower Mainland. The Society is now seeking a new Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization, improve its long-term sustainability, and ensure the continuous improvement of programs and services.

The ideal candidate will bring a track record of success in a leadership role in a not-for-profit organization that delivers programs and services with parallels to EFry such as mental health services, community social services or social justice. Experience that includes federal and provincial granting and housing is ideal. An outstanding people leader, the preferred candidate brings experience devising and implementing strategy, and has the proven expertise to elevate operations through the adoption of innovative business processes, technologies and structure.
