Non-Registrant Public Appointee

Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO) is responsible for regulating Ontario’s registered geoscientists and advancing professional practice. It protects the public by carrying out its objects as set out in Section 28(1) of the Professional Geoscientists Act, 2000.
In compliance with our Act, Council membership comprises of registered professional geoscientists and members of the public; that is, people who are not registered professional geoscientists and bring other perspectives and/or professional expertise to the table. PGO currently has one (1) vacant Councillor position for members of the public (referred to as a Non-Registrant Public Appointee). This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to serve the public of Ontario by being an active participant in the governance of PGO.
The ideal candidate must be a resident of Ontario and be committed to public protection and safeguarding the integrity of the geoscience profession.
PGO’s Nominations Committee will identify and recommend to Council an individual to the role of Non- Registrant Public Appointee with consideration given to a combination of the following:
• expertise in organizational, risk and financial management and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people;
• experience in a not-for-profit environment, or specifically with a self-regulatory body would be preferred but not essential;
• a strong commitment to the principles of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity;
• a strong commitment to actively contribute towards effective Council performance; and
• willingness to learn, particularly in the area of evolving and emerging best practices in self- regulation.
PGO Council Involvement
• Attendance at approximately 5 Council meetings per year, generally held in the Greater Toronto Area with option to access the meeting virtually – usually on Thursdays starting at 9 am and usually lasting for about approximately 6 hours. Travel and accommodation expenses to Council meetings is reimbursed;
• Review of all relevant documents in preparation for Council Meetings (approximately 2 hours);
• Attendance at orientation meetings for new Council Members and continuing professional development on governance and regulatory practices of self-regulatory bodies, throughout term;
• Commitment to a term starting in June (AGM) 2024 and ending in June 2027; and
• Councillors also sit on one (1) or two (2) committees as required, with associated additional time commitment.
