The Association of Major Power Consumers in Ontario (AMPCO) is the voice of industrial power users. AMPCO provides Ontario industries with effective advocacy on critical electricity policies, timely market analysis and expertise on regulatory matters that all affect their bottom line. AMPCO is the forum of choice for major power consumers who recognize that their business success depends on an affordable and reliable electricity system. Membership spans across mining, metals, petrochemicals, chemicals, forest products, automotive, and manufacturing sectors.
AMPCO is seeking its next President to lead the Association on behalf of industrial electricity users.
The President will have an aptitude for partnerships, an affinity for fostering consensus, and demonstrated experience in advocacy. An excellent listener and superb communicator, the President has a talent for actualising the potential of others and understands the dynamic of serving Boards with many views, but a common vision. He/she should be able to work with other associations and organisations with similar and diverse opinions.
As an ideal candidate, you are a skilled leader with experience leading organizations towards ambitious goals. You understand the decision-making processes of governments, and you have significant experience working with a Board of Directors. You excel when working with a wide variety of stakeholders and are characterised by others as a leader with impeccable integrity, vision, and drive. Most importantly, you resonate with the values, challenges, and future of industry in Ontario, and can connect with that mission through AMPCO.
IDEAL PROFILE
The next President of AMPCO should have:
- Political Contacts and Advocacy Experience: The President will have a detailed understanding of how government works and will be able to navigate political dynamics and government bureaucracy to maintain the priority and currency of AMPCO with government stakeholders. The ideal candidate should have an existing network within government and be able to call upon this network as required.
- Stakeholder Management: The President understands that multi-stakeholder environments require a strategic approach to relationship management, and that AMPCO needs to maintain strong relationships with political, public service, and private sector stakeholders that often have divergent views or different perspectives.
- Advanced Interpersonal Skills: The President will be adept at managing a variety of personalities: a skilled negotiator, facilitator, industry champion, and networker. The ideal President is open, affable, has a high degree of integrity, and will constantly seek to maximize opportunities for AMPCO and its members.
- Advanced Communication Skills: The President should articulate his/her thoughts clearly and present information in a straightforward and logical way. The President shares information with others, can listen to varying points of view, and should have a gift for public speaking to internal and external audiences.
- Strategic Thinking Skills: The President will be adept at identifying long-term goals, finding creative and strategic solutions to complex problems, and will ensure that AMPCO is well positioned to meet future challenges.
- Management Skills/Experience: The President is a natural leader with demonstrated experience directing and leading staff to accomplish organizational goals and objectives. The President will create a context that encourages success, rewards hard work, and creates a positive workplace environment for all. As a manager, you are team-oriented, resourceful, inclusive, and committed to the mentorship and professional development of a small staff.
- Member Management: Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President will be particularly adept at managing the multiple priorities of members and ensure that each continues to see the value of a strong association. The President will likewise actively seek to recruit new members.
While not mandatory for this position, an understanding of and experience in Ontario’s heavily regulated energy sector is preferred.
Location: Preferred place of residence would be in or near the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). A majority of advocacy efforts will be focused with the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
