The Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP) is the provincial chapter for the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and was established 70 years ago. We are a member-based, not-for-profit organization now representing over 6,000 family physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students across Alberta. We support certification of our members by providing continuing professional development (CPD) and upholding the established standards for certified learning. As the voice for family physicians in Alberta, we lobby and advocate on behalf of our members to advance excellence of family practice, define and celebrate the role of family medicine and family practice as the foundation of our health care system, and work to ensure Albertans can access high quality care from family physicians. Role Overview

The ACFP is seeking a strategic, collaborative, and visionary Executive Director (ED) to lead our organization. The ED role at the ACFP focuses on internal operational excellence, resource and financial stewardship, program and service delivery, external relationships, and building coalitions and alliances in service to its members as owners and customers. As a registered lobbyist, the ED supports the ACFP in persistent public and government relations to influence health policy in support of the ACFP’s strategic priorities. The ED leads strategic planning, change management, growth, and innovation within the organization and its partners ensuring relevance and value to members and the primary health care system. This role is a unique opportunity to impact the dynamically evolving primary and overall health care landscape in Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership, Systems Thinking, Change Management, and Innovation: Think in complex systems while leading the development of and execute strategic plans aligned with ACFP’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities as defined periodically by the Board
  • Board Support and Collaboration: Work closely with the Board, maintaining and enacting governance policy, planning and supporting effective meetings, providing regular updates, and supporting governance activities
  • Operational Excellence: Ensure excellence in operations including resource optimization, leading strong teams, program and service delivery, financial stewardship, and risk management
  • Financial Health, Growth, and Sustainability: Manage membership fee and program revenues for service to ACFP members. Secure and manage grants and service agreements aligned with strategic priorities and operational goals of the ACFP
  • Communications and Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with members, partners, government, agencies, and other interest holders
  • Advocacy: Represent the ACFP as a spokesperson, lobbying for, and championing the needs of the members and the communities they serve

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in senior leadership roles, preferably within primary care, not-for-profit, or business sector
  • Strong understanding of not-for-profit policy governance, financial management, and operational best practices
  • Previous experience working with, reporting to, or sitting on a Board of Directors
  • Familiarity with primary care in Alberta
  • Demonstrated expertise in advocacy, relationship and coalition building, and navigating complex systems
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing diverse funding streams and budgets
  • Proven ability to lead and manage hybrid teams while fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution, change management, and driving innovation in a dynamic environment
  • Exceptional communication skills, including public speaking, media engagement, and building relationships with partners and interest holders
  • Familiarity with government relations and a strong understanding of policy development processes
  • Technological proficiency, including experience with digital tools for virtual collaboration and organizational efficiency
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field is preferred but not required; relevant experience is prioritized
