Interim Executive Director

The Canadian Association of Management Consultants (CMC-Canada) fosters excellence and integrity in the management consulting profession. CMC-Canada administers, and its provincial Institutes confer, the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation in Canada. The Association and its 2,600+ members advocate for the CMC designation and are dedicated to advancing the profession and delivering the benefits of those efforts to the client community.

Our Mission is to advance the practice and profile of management consulting in Canada through education and certification of consultants, promotion of ethical standards and professional competency, and advocacy for the profession in public and government settings. 

Based in Toronto, we are seeking an experienced, progressive and dynamic professional to provide interim leadership to the organization in an Interim Executive Director role following the recent resignation of the current Managing Director.  Reporting to the Chair of the National Board of Directors, the Interim Executive Director will be responsible and accountable for:

  • Transitioning the organization including transfer of knowledge from the current Managing Director prior to their departure;
  • Providing a stabilizing presence and operational guidance and management to the staff complement post departure of the Managing Director and to resolve issues and set priorities;
  • Ensuring that other efforts that are non-operational such as delivering the Association’s strategic objectives, which include member recruitment, certification, as well as strengthening the identity, position and voice of the management consulting profession and achieving effective engagement with members and key stakeholders continues;
  • Managing specific files such as a program providing consulting assistance by members to start-up organizations, ensuring a successful annual general meeting and working with the finance function on the close of our fiscal year;
  • Support the governance process and secretarial function to the National Board and associated committees as required; and
  • Engaging and being responsive to the certifying institutes that represent the provinces and our members on matters related to governance, Joint Services Committee,  and certification.

During an initial period, which is to be agreed upon, the successful candidate will prepare a diagnostic with observations for the Board with respect to the operations and any thoughtfulness or suggestions to inform the full search process for the permanent Executive Director.

As an inclusive and empowering leader, the ideal candidate will have successfully led people, strategy and change in a complex, multi-stakeholder and multi-issue environment.  Possessing a degree in Business Administration or related degree or the equivalent mix of education and experience, s/he will have a demonstrated track record for performing in an executive role, working with a Board of Directors and familiarity with Board governance.  Candidates will bring superior communications and change management expertise, along with a successful record in advocacy and government relations.  Experience working in a senior leadership role in the not-for-profit or national association/NGO sector would be an asset.  S/he will possess excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills and will be an effective and transparent communicator in all respects, operating collegially and collaboratively at all levels.  The ability to communicate effectively with advanced oral and written skills in English is essential; intermediate oral and written skills in French are a definite asset. 

The anticipated start date for this position is September 17 and will run until December 31, 2018.  Remuneration will not exceed $10,000 per month (pro-rated).  There is no stipend for travel or accommodations.  The role is based at CMC National Office on Bay Street in Toronto.  The interim Executive Director will not be considered during the recruitment process for the permanent position which will be filled late 2018.
