SENIOR DIRECTOR, RESEARCH, ADVOCACY & COMMUNICATIONS

The National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC), a national Ottawa-based association is seeking an experienced policy and public affairs professional to join its team as Senior Director, Research, Advocacy & Communications.

The National Airlines Council of Canada was founded in 2008 and represents Canada’s largest air carriers – Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat and Jazz Aviation.  It advocates for sound, environmentally responsible and modally competitive policies through constructive engagement with governments, stakeholders and media. THE POSITION

SENIOR DIRECTOR, RESEARCH, ADVOCACY & COMMUNICATIONS

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Senior Director will be responsible for the development and implementation of public affairs strategies including government and stakeholder relations, as well as research and analysis in support of NACC's corporate objectives. Effective communication skills, discretion, sound judgment and professionalism are paramount in this role.

This is a full-time permanent position with a target start date of February 2019.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identifies, researches and assesses external issues that affect Canada’s commercial airline industry and proposes strategies and tactics to address them
  • Works with the President and CEO, other NACC staff and Committees in developing and implementing government relations, stakeholder engagement and communications strategies  
  • Manages NACC’s digital portfolio to expand the organization’s digital footprint and influence
  • Conducts (or leads) research on issues affecting or concerning Canada’s commercial airline industry
  • Fosters cooperative relations with media, governments and their agencies, stakeholder organizations and academia
  • Prepares meeting agenda and supporting materials including background and decision memoranda for the Board and NACC committees
  • Develops and executes internal communication strategies designed to inform and engage NACC members

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience and proven track record in government relations, communications, issue management and stakeholder engagement  
  • Experience in media relations
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research
  • Experience writing policy documents, briefing notes, backgrounders, etc.
  • Experience working in or with a federally-regulated industry is an asset
  • Experience working with volunteer boards and committees is an asset
  • Experience using digital media in a professional context is an asset

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Superior knowledge and understanding of the working of governments as well as public sector decision-making
  • Ability to communicate effectively and with confidence
  • Knowledge and understanding of the role of the media in setting the public agenda
  • Knowledge and understanding of non-profit association management and governance principles
  • Ability to write effectively for a variety of media
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite including MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Solid work ethic, commitment to producing high quality work, and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to work under the pressure of deadlines and shifting priorities in a fast-moving environment.
  • A self-starter with the demonstrated ability to work independently, and as part of a team, with minimal supervision
  • Bilingualism is an asset

Education

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in political science, public administration or economics; or an undergraduate degree in another discipline along with a relevant mix of experience is required.  A Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline is an asset.
