Director of Safe Scouting

The Director of Safe Scouting plays an instrumental role in supporting Scouts Canada’s safety culture. Demonstrating a firm commitment to harm and injury prevention, the Safe Scouting Director focuses on organizational learning approaches that foster strong safety attitudes and behaviours among all members. Acts as a trusted advisor to volunteers and staff on all matters relating to incident management, safety practices, and overall safety leadership. The Director of Safe Scouting will be responsible for:
- Ensures that Scouts Canada has the necessary safety framework in place to achieve its safety leadership aims.
- Acts as custodian of the organization’s risk management framework, ensuring regular reviews and updates based on organizational experience.
- Ensures sufficient processes are in place to assure compliance to Scouts Canada’s safety and risk management policies.
- Oversees Scouts Canada’s incident management process; case management of youth protection matters; ensures incidents are appropriately investigated and that root causes are employed to support learning and improvement of organizational practices.
- Works collaboratively with Scouting Experience teams to ensure safety tools and resources are available for all members and key stakeholders.
- Provides leadership and support to Groups, Areas, and Councils to ensure effective responses to safety complaints and incidents as well as to the Safe Scouting team including support to Scouts Canada Volunteers who are concerned for the welfare of youth entrusted in care.

You will have proven success in the following job-specific competencies:
- Detail oriented – ability to follow procedures and rules while maintaining accurate and detailed notes
- Be able to deal with sensitive situations in a calm, measured manner
What you bring to the table:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in youth protection, law enforcement, criminology, risk or safety management
- 5 years of experience protecting children/vulnerable populations and managing threats to these populations
- Demonstrated leadership abilities including coaching with an ability to work both strategically and operationally
- An understanding of the legal framework pertaining to child and youth safety combined with an understanding of the fundamentals of risk management and the ability to develop plans based on the risk assessment
- Demonstrable experience of structured and/or complex decision making using a fact based approach to problems
- Experience in supporting victims of crime, abuse or harassment
- Experience in risk assessing criminal records in relation to work with children, or vulnerable groups
- Proven success in designing and delivering policies, procedures and mechanisms to create safer environments
- Proven experience of interviewing individuals accused of misconduct and conducting investigations
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Experience delivering or supporting Scouts Canada programs is an asset
This role will require:
- Irregular hours such as evening and weekend work may be required to achieve objectives and collaborate with volunteers within an on-call environment
- Travel – up to 10%
